The Turkish Prime Minister, Ahmet Davutoğlu, highlighted that the fight against terrorist organizations is not the only aim for Turkey. Having a strategy for the future of Syria is a necessity. There is a need for new situations which wouldn’t leave any space for the organization or re-activation of the terrorist organizations or other regimes like the Assad regime.
At a time when Turkey is conducting the biggest air campaign against combined terrorist organizations the idea of creating a safe zone inside the Syrian border has become a focal point of Turkish and US foreign policy.
In an interview for CNN, Turkey’s Prime Minister, Ahmet Davutoğlu, stated that Turkey felt it necessary to get rid of ISIS from the Turkish territory after the attack in Suruc (32 people were dead). Davutoğlu strongly emphasized that this has not been a sudden turn in the Turkish politics as since a long time now Turkey has been active against terrorism and especially ISIS.
Regarding the safe area, Davutoğlu stated that having a place where the terrorist could not go and refugees could stay feeling safe are the main reasons why Turkey has been promoting this idea for some time now.
Furthermore, the Turkish Prime Minister highlighted that the fight against terrorist organizations is not the only aim for Turkey. Having a strategy for the future of Syria is a necessity. There is a need for new situations which wouldn’t leave any space for the organization or re-activation of the terrorist organizations.
Davutoğlu asserted that the main guilty for the creation of ISIS was the Assad regime and the reluctance of the international community which resulted in a vacuum used by ISIS. Moreover he considered ISIS as the product of a crisis not only its cause. And now it is not a threat only for Syria, but it is a threat to Turkey, to Europe, to US and to the world.
For this reason, there is a need to support the moderate opposition forces, the ones who are tolerant towards other Syrian citizens, who do not commit any terrorist crime and do not collaborate with the Syrian regime that is responsible for the humanitarian tragedies in the last 4-5 years.
With reference to PKK and Kurdish issue, Davutoğlu strongly stated that the fight is not against Kurdish people whether against the terrorist organization, PKK. Following a synchronized fight against terror, Turkey will continue to be active towards whoever is committing terrorist acts against Turkey.
While talking about the domestic political situation of Turkey, Davutoğlu stated that all the political parties in Turkey currently need to be united against terrorism and condemn the terrorist acts. However, HDP has not responded to this call. HDP is unable in choosing between either democracy or terror; either peace or violence. This dilemma comes as a result of the links that they have with PKK, resulting in a lack of capacity to condemn PKK even when they killed the Turkish civilians and police servants.
